Professional Dental Fillings

A dental filling is the most common and essential procedure used to repair teeth damaged by decay (cavities) or minor fractures. At Dr 7 Family Dentistry, we focus on modern, tooth-colored (composite) fillings that not only restore the structural integrity and function of your tooth but also blend seamlessly with your natural smile. Fixing decay early is the best defense against complex issues like root canals and extractions.

What Are Dental Fillings?

A dental filling is a restorative material placed into the tooth structure after a dentist has removed the decayed or damaged portion. The material seals the tooth, preventing bacteria from penetrating deeper and arresting the infection. Our preferred and primary choice for restorations is:

  • Composite (Tooth-Colored) Fillings: Made from a mixture of acrylic resin and finely ground glass-like particles. These are bonded directly to the tooth structure, requiring less removal of healthy tooth material and providing a durable, highly aesthetic restoration that matches the surrounding tooth color.
  • Amalgam (Silver) Fillings: While safe and durable, we primarily use composite material due to its superior aesthetic results and ability to bond directly to the tooth.

Fillings successfully restore the tooth’s shape, function, and natural appearance.

Benefits of Dental Fillings

Stops Decay and Prevents Infection

Removing decayed tissue and sealing the void immediately halts the progression of the cavity, protecting the pulp (nerve) inside the tooth from painful infection.

Restores Full Function

Fillings rebuild the damaged tooth surface, restoring proper shape and integrity, allowing you to chew comfortably and effectively on all sides of your mouth.

Natural, Seamless Appearance

Using composite material ensures your restoration is practically invisible, maintaining the aesthetic harmony of your smile.

Cost-Effective Prevention

Addressing decay with a filling is significantly less expensive and less invasive than waiting until the decay reaches the nerve, which would require a root canal and possibly a dental crown.

Our Dental Fillings Process

We perform dental fillings routinely and meticulously, prioritizing your comfort:

Numbing and Isolation

The area around the affected tooth is completely numbed with local anesthesia. We then isolate the tooth to keep it dry and contamination-free during the procedure.

01

Decay Removal

The dentist uses specialized instruments to gently and precisely remove all traces of decay and bacteria from the tooth.

03

Preparation and Bonding

For composite fillings, a mild etching solution is applied to the tooth to prepare the surface. A bonding agent is then applied to create a strong, lasting seal.

04

Material Placement and Curing

The soft composite resin is placed in layers into the prepared area. A high-intensity light (curing light) is used to quickly harden the material.

Who Needs Dental Fillings?

If a comprehensive dental exam reveals any of the following, a dental filling is the recommended treatment:

Diagnosed Cavities

Decay that has penetrated the outer enamel layer and reached the softer dentin layer.

Minor Fractures or Chips

Small structural defects caused by trauma or pressure that can be repaired without the need for a full crown.

Replacing Old, Compromised Fillings

Replacing old, cracked, or leaking amalgam fillings to prevent new decay from forming beneath them.

Worn Surfaces

Teeth exhibiting excessive wear or erosion that can be restored with composite material.

Dental Fillings Cost and Insurance Information

Dental fillings are used to treat cavities and restore damaged teeth. The cost of dental fillings depends on factors such as the size of the cavity, the location of the tooth, and the type of filling material used. Coverage for fillings varies by insurance plan.

Dr7 Family Dentistry accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for eligible patients. Coverage for dental fillings under CDCP depends on clinical need and program guidelines. Our team will review your coverage and explain any costs before treatment.

For patients without insurance or CDCP coverage, filling fees are discussed clearly in advance as part of your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is getting a filling painful?

No. We ensure the entire area is completely numb using local anesthesia before starting the decay removal. You should only feel pressure, never pain, during the actual procedure.

Composite fillings typically last between 5 to 10 years, depending on their size, your chewing forces, and your oral hygiene. They are checked for wear and leakage at every routine exam.

While composite fillings are highly resistant to staining, they can absorb stain over a long period, especially if exposed to heavy tobacco use or excessive coffee/red wine. They cannot be whitened like natural tooth structure.

If the filling is composite (tooth-colored), the material is cured and fully hardened before you leave the office. You can eat immediately, but we recommend waiting until the local anesthesia wears off to avoid accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.
