Professional Sedation Dentistry

At Dr 7 Family Dentistry, we believe everyone deserves comfortable, anxiety-free dental care. Sedation Dentistry uses safe, administered medication to help patients achieve a state of deep relaxation, reducing fear and allowing us to complete essential treatments efficiently. Whether you have mild anxiety or a significant dental phobia, we offer personalized sedation options to transform your visit into a calm and positive experience.

Personalized Levels of Comfort and Relaxation

Sedation Dentistry involves the use of pharmacological agents to help patients relax and manage pain during dental procedures. The goal is to induce a state of deep tranquility and calm, although patients are typically conscious, minimally monitored, and able to respond to commands. We offer customized levels of sedation based on patient need and medical history:

  • Minimal Sedation (Nitrous Oxide): Commonly known as ‘laughing gas,’ this is inhaled through a nose mask. You remain fully conscious but enter a deeply relaxed and often euphoric state. The effects wear off within minutes once the mask is removed.
  • Moderate Sedation (Oral Sedation): A prescribed pill is taken shortly before the appointment. This often leaves the patient feeling very groggy, and many remember little or nothing of the actual procedure (amnesia effect).
  • IV Sedation: Administered intravenously, this provides a deeper, more predictable, and continuously monitored state of relaxation, ideal for longer or more complex surgical procedures.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Eliminates Dental Anxiety and Phobia

It removes the emotional barrier of fear, enabling patients who have postponed years of essential dental work to finally receive comprehensive care.

Minimizes Discomfort and Sensitivity

Sedation raises the pain threshold, making the administration of local anesthesia and the procedure itself more comfortable.

Manages a Sensitive Gag Reflex

The relaxation induced by sedation is highly effective in controlling or eliminating the sensitive gag reflex that can interfere with standard procedures.

Allows for Fewer Appointments

Complex or multiple procedures, which would typically require several visits, can often be safely consolidated into one longer, more efficient session while the patient is comfortably relaxed.

Our Sedation Dentistry Process

We follow a strict protocol to ensure your sedation journey is safe, effective, and comfortable:

Consultation and Health Review

We conduct a thorough review of your complete medical history, current medications, and discuss your specific concerns to determine the safest and most effective type of sedation.

01

Pre-Sedation Instructions

Clear, written instructions are provided, which include guidelines on fasting (for oral or IV sedation) and the crucial requirement of arranging for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the appointment.

03

Administration and Monitoring

The sedative is administered. Throughout the entire procedure, a trained team member continuously monitors your vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation levels.

04

The Procedure and Recovery

Once you are adequately relaxed, the dental work is completed. After the procedure, you are slowly brought back to a more alert state and monitored in a recovery area until you are stable enough to be escorted home.

Candidates of Sedation Dentistry

You should consider sedation if you fall into one of the following categories:

Severe Dental Phobia or Anxiety

Individuals who experience panic, dread, or overwhelming stress before a dental appointment.

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Patients whose involuntary reflex prevents the dentist from comfortably working inside their mouth.

Need for Extensive Treatment

Those requiring multiple fillings, complex root canals, or several extractions in a single visit.

Difficulty Getting Numb

Patients who have historically struggled to achieve full numbness with local anesthesia alone.

Sedation Dentistry Cost and Insurance Information

Sedation dentistry may be recommended for patients who experience dental anxiety, have difficulty sitting through longer procedures, or require more complex treatment. Coverage for sedation services varies by insurance plan and the type of sedation used.

Dr7 Family Dentistry accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for eligible patients. Coverage for sedation dentistry under CDCP depends on clinical need and program guidelines. Our team will review your eligibility and explain any associated costs before treatment.

For patients without insurance or CDCP coverage, sedation fees are discussed clearly in advance based on the level of care required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I truly "asleep" with sedation?

No. With the exception of general anesthesia (which we do not typically offer), you are not put to sleep. You are deeply relaxed, very drowsy, and may drift into a light sleep, but you remain responsive to verbal prompts.

The effects of Nitrous Oxide wear off immediately after the mask is removed. For Oral and IV Sedation, the main effects wear off within a few hours, but you should treat the entire day as a recovery period and must have an adult escort drive you.

Yes. When administered and monitored by trained professionals, sedation is highly safe. Our comprehensive medical review process is designed to ensure you are a safe candidate before we proceed.

Yes. Sedation is for relaxation and anxiety reduction, not pain elimination. We still administer a localized anesthetic (a numbing shot) to ensure the physical treatment area is pain-free, but the sedation helps you relax so you don’t even worry about the injection itself.
